Not coming from a GT Program
Q. We missed the screening deadline. How can we have our child screened for next year?
A. If your family enrolled in Katy ISD after the regular screening deadline and you want your child screened for the GT program, you will need to fill out a parent checklist and return the signed and completed form to the campus counseling office within 2 weeks of your child enrollment.

GT-TRANSFER SCREENING
Q. We just moved and my child was in a GT program. What do we do to have him/her in Katy ISD's GT program?
A. We are currently screening GT-transfer students. You must fill out a GT Transfer parent form within 2 weeks of your child enrolling on campus. This form is available through the counseling offices or on my home page. Proof of previous GT service also must be provided within those 2 weeks.
Q. We went to GT Central Advising in August. Now what?
A. GT transfer screening can take up to 6-8 weeks. Placement decisions will be made as soon as all necessary tests have been administered. Parents will be mailed notification letters via USPS mail as soon as possible. If your child qualifies for service, he/she will start as soon as is appropriate. If your child does not qualify, he/she is eligible to be screened at the beginning of the next school year upon parents' request.

FAQ
Q. What is the GT Secondary Program?
A. The secondary GT service model is a Specific Subject Matter Aptitude model. Identified students in grades 6-12 are served in one or more of the four core content areas of English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. For more information, please click on the Advanced Academics logo on the About GT page.
Q. What is the difference between PreAP and GT?
A. PreAP classes are advanced level curriculum in order to prepare students for Advanced Placement courses that can be taken in high school. This type of course is often appealing to the GT student since the pace and rigor is higher. A PreAP/GT course might have a mix of GT students and PreAP students in the same class. Sometimes the school will offer self-contained GT sections where only GT students are in the class. In order for the class to be considered PreAP/GT, the teacher must have 30 hours of GT training. Another benefit is that GT students are clustered together. This can meet their social and emotional needs since other students like them are in the same class. For more information about PreAP classes, please click on the PreAP logo on the About GT page.
Q. When do GT services begin?
A. For GT-transfer students, services begin as soon as screening is finished. For General Screening, services will begin the next school year.
Q. What do I choose for my course selection(s) if I'm being screened for GT?
A. If your student is being screened for GT placement, please select PreAP courses on the course selection sheet; do not select GT. Counselors are notified of any placement changes, and they will make the appropriate changes for the fall.
